Stape alternatives: server-side tracking tools and managed services, compared

By J.R. Pershall · Updated October 28, 2026

Stape vs TAGGRS, Addingwell, Google Cloud, Meta's CAPI Gateway, Littledata, Elevar, Aimerce, Tracklution and managed services: what each costs and fits.

Stape is server-side GTM hosting you set up yourself, from $17 a month billed annually. The alternatives are other hosts such as TAGGRS and Addingwell, self-hosting on Google Cloud, and Meta’s own Conversions API Gateway. Littledata, Elevar, Aimerce and Tracklution install as apps or plug-ins. Managed services build and maintain the setup for you; Waterloo Track runs on Stape.

Which Stape alternative should you choose?

One line per situation.

  • If you advertise only on Google, choose Google Tag Gateway, not a server container. It changes the hostname your tag is served from and covers GA4 and Google Ads only.
  • If you want to send events to Meta from a server in your own cloud account, look at Meta’s Conversions API Gateway. It needs a third-party cloud account such as AWS, and Meta says its only cost is “the associated cloud resource or partner fees.”
  • If you want the tagging server on your own Google Cloud bill, self-host on Cloud Run. Google puts it at about $45 a month per server, recommends at least 2 instances, and tells you to set a billing alert.
  • If someone on your team knows GTM and you want a hosted container, choose Stape, TAGGRS or Addingwell. All three have a free tier.
  • If you’re on Shopify, process few orders and don’t want GTM, look at Littledata’s Flex plan, which starts at $0.35 per order with no monthly minimum.
  • If you’re on Shopify and want an app plus someone to install it, look at Elevar, whose Expert installation is a $1,000 one-time fee.
  • If you haven’t checked what Shopify’s own Meta integration already sends, do that before you buy anything (open Events Manager and compare last week’s purchases with your Shopify orders).
  • If you want someone to build, test and maintain the pipeline every month, choose a managed service such as Waterloo Track.

Only the last line is us. The other seven are situations where we’d point you elsewhere.

Is Stape a good choice?

For a team that wants to run its own server container, Stape is a reasonable place to start, and we use it ourselves: Waterloo Track is built on server-side Google Tag Manager, hosted on Stape.

In its own words, “Stape is server-side tagging. We provide server GTM hosting, power-ups, and APIs.” It lists integrations with Shopify, WordPress, Salesforce, HubSpot, HighLevel, Zoho, Pipedrive, Klaviyo, Magento and Wix, with a free plan of up to 10K requests and a self-serve setup wizard.

What Stape’s home and pricing pages don’t state is a managed service. Its human help is an Enterprise account manager, call support, a community of experts and a partner programme, with a Partner Directory where you can “Browse trusted agencies and integrations worldwide.”

Three things worth knowing. Elevar’s pricing now lives on Audiense’s site. Addingwell’s price simulator and pricing table disagree on the 5,000,000-request plan (€70 vs €120), so ask them. And Google’s own Cloud Run guide calls the max-instances setting “the worst case scenario for how much you will need to pay.”

Server-side tracking vs a Meta CAPI Shopify app: which is better?

Neither, by default. The answer depends on what each one actually sends.

Shopify’s free Facebook & Instagram app adds Meta’s Conversions API at the Enhanced and Maximum data-sharing levels, and the Conversions API sends the purchase event between Shopify’s and Facebook’s servers. That’s a real server path. But Shopify’s documented setup has no step for click-ID capture on the first hit, cross-domain persistence or redirect preservation. Foxwell Digital, a practitioner with no tracking product to sell, calls out the integration’s weakness at sending back the fbc and fbp parameters.

A server container is different in scope: one control point that routes to GA4, Google Ads, Meta and other destinations. More in why Meta ads under-report conversions on Shopify.

Is there a managed alternative to Stape?

Yes, though it’s a different kind of thing. A managed service runs on a host; it doesn’t replace one.

Waterloo Track is one, a done-for-you service built on Stape and run monthly, because a tracking pipeline has to keep running after launch. Stape’s Partner Directory lists agencies too, sorted into Level 1 and Level 2 partners.

Frequently asked questions

What is Stape?
Stape describes itself as server-side tagging: server GTM hosting, power-ups and APIs. It is a self-serve hosting product with a free plan and a setup wizard. On October 28, 2026 its Pro plan was listed at $17 a month, billed annually.
What are the main alternatives to Stape?
Other server-side GTM hosts such as TAGGRS and Addingwell; self-hosting on Google Cloud; Meta's Conversions API Gateway, run in your own cloud account; Shopify apps such as Littledata, Elevar and Aimerce; Tracklution, which says it works with any CMS; and managed services such as Waterloo Track.
Can I host server-side GTM on Google Cloud instead of Stape?
Yes. Google lets you provision the tagging server on Cloud Run automatically from Tag Manager or manually in Google Cloud, with a GCP billing account. Google puts each Cloud Run server at about $45 a month and recommends at least 2 instances, and advises setting a billing alert.
Is there a managed alternative to Stape?
Yes. Managed services run on top of a host rather than replacing one. Waterloo Track, for example, is a done-for-you server-side tracking service built on server-side GTM hosted on Stape and maintained monthly. Its price and what it includes are on the Waterloo Track page at waterloo.digital/products/track.
Server-side tracking or Shopify's Meta CAPI app: which is better?
It depends on what flows through it. Shopify's free Facebook & Instagram app adds Meta's Conversions API at its Enhanced and Maximum data-sharing levels, but its documented setup has no step for click-ID capture or redirect preservation. A server container gives you one control point for every destination.
Why would an agency that uses Stape compare against it?
Because Stape is infrastructure, not a service. Waterloo Track runs on Stape hosting. The real question is whether you want to run that infrastructure yourself or have someone maintain it monthly, and that choice exists whichever host sits underneath.
