Who can set up server-side tracking for your ecommerce store?

By J.R. Pershall · Updated October 28, 2026

Six routes to server-side tracking for a store: Stape or TAGGRS, Google Cloud, Meta's CAPI Gateway, a Shopify app, a Stape partner, or a managed service.

Six kinds of provider can set it up. You can run server-side GTM yourself on Stape, TAGGRS or Google Cloud; use Meta’s Conversions API Gateway in your own cloud; install a Shopify app such as Littledata, which skips GTM; hire an agency from Stape’s Partner Directory; or use a managed service such as Waterloo Track.

Who can set up server-side GTM for my ecommerce store?

The six routes, with names. Routes 1, 2 and 6 run server-side GTM. Route 4 skips GTM, and route 3 is Meta’s own gateway.

  1. You, on a hosted container. Stape, TAGGRS and Addingwell all host server-side GTM, with free plans and self-serve setup.
  2. You, on Google Cloud. Google lets you provision the tagging server on Cloud Run “either automatically in Google Tag Manager or manually in Google Cloud,” with a GCP billing account.
  3. You, with Meta’s Conversions API Gateway. It’s a self-serve option in Events Manager that you self-provision in your own cloud account (for example, AWS).
  4. A Shopify app. Littledata says its server-side tracking is live “with no GTM and no code.” Elevar and Aimerce also install on Shopify.
  5. An agency from Stape’s Partner Directory, where you can “Browse trusted agencies and integrations worldwide.”
  6. A managed service, such as Waterloo Track, our done-for-you server-side tracking service, built on Stape and maintained monthly.

What does setting it up yourself involve?

The hosting is the easy part. Stape offers a free plan and a self-serve “Setup Wizard” it says takes “just a few minutes.” On Google Cloud, Google puts each Cloud Run server at about $45 a month, recommends at least 2 instances, and tells you to set a billing alert.

Google’s server-side tagging docs “strongly recommend installing the server on your first-party domain,” so plan for a tagging subdomain. Then comes the work no wizard does. For Meta, a pixel event and its server copy are matched on ID and name, so the pixel’s eventID has to equal the Conversions API’s event_id or the purchase is counted twice.

After launch, someone has to own it. Server-side tracking is a live pipeline that has to keep running, not a one-time install.

Can a Shopify app do server-side tracking without GTM?

Speed over control.

Yes. Some apps install from the Shopify App Store and handle the server side without you running a GTM container. Littledata says server-side tracking “is live in about 10 minutes, with no GTM and no code.” Aimerce lists “Instant setup · 15 min” on Shopify.

The trade is flexibility. You get the destinations and settings the app supports (Littledata lists GA4, Google Ads, Meta, Klaviyo, TikTok, Microsoft Advertising, Pinterest and Segment).

Where do I find an agency to set it up?

Start with Stape’s Partner Directory. It lists agencies and integrations, with filters for partner level (Level 1 and Level 2) and location.

Some vendors also sell installation themselves. Elevar, which offers server-side tracking for Shopify stores through its Shopify app or API, lists Expert installation as a $1,000 one-time fee. Littledata’s Plus plan, which starts at $792 a month paying annually ($990 paying monthly), adds managed onboarding. TAGGRS says its “Implementation Experts and Developers handle every technical update.”

Who offers server-side tracking as a managed service?

On the pages we read on October 28, 2026, Stape stated no managed service of its own, only an Enterprise account manager, call support and its partner programme. Tracklution calls itself “fully managed,” which on its pages refers to maintaining the infrastructure; its pages state no done-for-you installation.

Waterloo Track is a managed option: we plan, build, test at every hop and maintain the pipeline every month. It makes sense when nobody on your team wants to own a GTM container.

Do I need server-side tracking if I use Shopify’s Meta integration?

Possibly not, and you can check before you spend anything. Shopify’s Enhanced and Maximum data-sharing settings already use Meta’s Conversions API as well as the pixel.

What that setting doesn’t tell you is what flows through it. Shopify’s documented setup has no step for capturing click IDs on the first hit, keeping them across domains, or preserving them through redirects. To test it, open Meta Events Manager, look at your event match quality and last week’s purchases, and put that next to your Shopify order count. The full picture is in why Meta ads under-report conversions on Shopify.

When don’t you need any of this?

If you only advertise on Google, Google Tag Gateway may be all you need. It changes the hostname your tag is served from, covers GA4 and Google Ads only, and is a cheap way to get some ad-blocker resistance.

And if someone in-house already knows Google Tag Manager and will own the container, a self-serve host may be all the outside help you need.

If you’d rather not own the container yourself, see how Waterloo Track works.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set up server-side Google Tag Manager myself?
Yes. Hosts such as Stape and TAGGRS are self-serve with free plans, and Google lets you provision the server on Cloud Run straight from Tag Manager. The hosting is the quick part. You still need a tracking plan, matching event IDs on both paths, and someone to maintain the container.
Can I get server-side tracking on Shopify without using GTM?
Yes. Some Shopify apps run server-side tracking without you managing a GTM container. Littledata says its server-side tracking is live in about 10 minutes, with no GTM and no code. Aimerce lists a 15-minute Shopify install. You work inside the destinations and settings the app supports.
Where can I find an agency to set up server-side GTM?
Stape runs a Partner Directory where you can browse agencies and integrations worldwide, filtered by partner level and location. Stape's own home and pricing pages state no managed service of their own. Managed services such as Waterloo Track build and maintain the setup for you.
Which tracking vendors list a paid installation?
On the pages we read on October 28, 2026, Elevar lists Expert installation for a $1,000 one-time fee and headless or API installation for $4,500, and Littledata's Plus plan, which starts at $792 a month paying annually ($990 paying monthly), adds managed onboarding. We found no published done-for-you installation price for Stape, TAGGRS, Tracklution, Aimerce or Addingwell.
Do I need server-side tracking if I use Shopify's Meta integration?
Maybe not. Shopify's Enhanced and Maximum settings already add Meta's Conversions API. Check before you buy anything: open Meta Events Manager, look at event match quality and last week's purchases, and put that next to your Shopify order count for the same week.
